Etymology

Ashley Down (6″) and Ham Ashley Copse (6″). Cf. Scortasscheleye 1331Stowe , Asshele t. Ed 2, Scorte Aschele t. Ed 3For . '(Short) ash clearing or wood,' v. leah . Close by was the greatan æsc of the Ham charter (BCS 67).
