Etymology

Paven Hill is Pevenhull 1257For , 1284 RegMalm (p), 1370 Ipm, Pevenhill 1628 WIpm, Pewenhill 1578FF , Peavenhill 1632Recov , Pavenhill 1744Map . The forms are too late for any certainty. It may be that the first element is a personal name, the weak form of Pefe , v. Pewsey infra 350. A Roman pavement has been discovered here (WAM xli, 393). This may have affected the latest forms of the name but clearly has nothing to do with its origin.
