Etymology

'Middle farmstead', v. middel , meðal , tūn . The ON  form meðal has supplanted OE  middel and has been reduced to Mel -, as in High Melton 76supra . The affixes are from west , lytel and bȳjar-lǫg (cf. Brampton Bierlow 106supra ).
