Etymology

The two early spellings Wintre -, Winter - point to the first el. being the OE  pers.n. Wintra , as in Wentworth C 243, which also has only vestigial evidence of a medial -re -. 'Wintra's enclosure', v. worð .The first el. could formally be winter 'winter', but worð is usually combined with a pers.n.
