Etymology

Shipmanthorpe, 1558 WillY, 1817 M. v. þorp 'outlying farmstead'.The first el. is either OE  scip-man 'shipman, sailor', here used as a surname, or ME  schepman 'shepherd', also used as a surname (v. Thuresson 63, 83).
