Etymology

Phynis, Fynas l. 14 Kirkst, Fynnesse 1538MinAcct , Finnace 1741 PRBnt, Phinis 1771 M. Phynis stands at the foot of a ridge formed between Phynis Beck and the R. Hodder, and probably on semantic and topographical grounds the name is a compound of OE , ON  finn 'coarse grass' and næss 'headland'.
