Etymology

Browsholme Hall, Broghesholm , Broghisholm 1343, 1423MinAcct , Brogh 'seholme 1423 ib, Broosholme , Brooshom 1621 PRWd, 1651ParlSurv , Brows (e )holme 1621 PRWd, 1638 YD iii, 1642 WillY, Brousholme 1665 Visit. 'Brogh's water-meadow', v. holmr . The first el. appears to be a pers.n. of this form, but its origin is obscure. There is a rare OE  Brōga (possibly derived from OE  brōga 'terror', cf. Redin 74); a strong form Brōg (i ) might have existed but is doubtful. The only other possible suggestion is that the pers.n. Brōgh is from Ir  bróg 'shoe'.
