Etymology

Middlethorpe (lost), Midelthorp , Midilthorp 13, 1297, 1317 Selby, 1400SelbyCt , Medilthorp 1377AddCh 45830, Myddlethorpe Street 1660 SelbyW, v. middel , þorp 'outlying farmstead'. The location of this outlier of Selby is not known. It may have been called 'middle' because it was located between Gowthorpe supra and Thorpe Hall infra .
