Bondgate, formerly a street, Bondgate 1638 SelbyW, a common st.n., 'street of peasants', v. bondi, gata; ON  bondi 'a peasant landowner' occurs in other local names, assartum le Bondes 1244–54 Selby, Bond (e )croft 13, 1254–62 ib (v. croft), Bondfeld 13 ib (v. feld), and Bondkerre 1400SelbyCt , Bonkar 1708 SelbyW (v. kjarr 'marsh').
