Etymology

'(H)albe's water-meadow', v. holmr . The pers.n. (H )albe or (H )abbe is a hypocoristic form of ON  Hallbjǫrn (or if h - is inorganic, of ON  Ǫlbjǫrn ), parallel to Habe (DaneCh 573, Habton YN 74) from ON  Hábjǫrn . The dike is a small stream described as fossato currente 1321 Selby i, 5. v. Addenda.
