Etymology

This is the name of an old stretch of open common alongside the Great North Road (cf. also Peckfield Close 55, Peckfield Fm 57, Peckfield Ho 96infra ). From the topography it would appear to mean 'stretch of open country on the hill', v. pēac , feld . The highest point on the Great North Road in the district is near Peckfield Bar cross-roads. The earliest spellings with Pec (c )h - are all from one document (Pont), and are AN  for Pek - (cf. Pegsdon Bd 175–6).
