Etymology

This is a compound of OE  hlēp 'leap' and tūn. The exact significance is uncertain; the village is towards the top of a hillside, but there is no topographical feature of note. But the probability is that Lepton means 'farmstead on the slope of a hill'; on this use of hlēp (which also meant 'leaping place, jump') cf. Löfvenberg 127.
