Etymology

Ingmanthorpe, Germundstorp , Gemunstorp 1086 DB, later Indegkemanethorp 1204–9 YCh x, Ingmanthorp (e ), Yngmanthorp (e )1285Heal 64, 1285 KI, 1294 Eboret freq to 1505 WillY, Ingemanthorp 1393 YD v, 237, 1400Heal 67d. Originally 'Germund's outlying farm', v. þorp . ON , ODan  Ge (i )rmund (r ) was replaced by Ingman , presumably the name of a later tenant; this pers.n., recorded as a surname from 1444 (Bardsley), occurs as early Dan  Ingiman , Swed  Ingeman , possibly a later form of ON  Ingimundr , but since both themes of the pers.n. (Ingi -, -mann ) are well known it may be original; the p.n. supports this. Cf. the Dan  p.n. Ingemanstorp (DaGP s.n.).
