Etymology

v. bȳjar-staðr 'farmstead, site of a farm', as in the fairly common Norw  p.n. Bjaastad (NGIndl 76). The OE  byrg -stæð 'landing-place belonging to a burg or fort' suggested by Ekwall is an improbable explanation topographically.
