Historical Forms

  • Spit(e)gill 1613,1634 PR
  • Spitsagill 1635 ib

Etymology

Spice Gill, 1771, Spit (e )gill 1613, 1634 PR, Spitsagill 1635 ib. This is possibly from an ON  byname Spýtr (connected with spýta 'to stick with pins'), though it is not recorded; it would be related to the byname Spjót (from ON  spjót 'spear'). It might possibly enter into the Norw  p.n. Spishøl , older Spiizsillæ , which has been explained as from ON  spǽtr 'woodpecker' (cf. NG vi, 137); the latter word is phonologically unlikely in Spice Gill. v. gil 'ravine'.
