Etymology

Coventree, 1771 M, Coventree 1656 PRSed, 1729 PR. Probably the dial. word coven-tree 'the guelder rose', cf. Coventry iii, 146supra for other p.n. examples. The origin of the word is obscure. NED s.v. notes a Scots  usage of coven-tree for 'a large tree in front of a house where the laird met his visitors', but this is apparently from Scots  coven 'assembly', a variant of convent ; it is unlikely here.
