Etymology

Stony Gate, Stanigate 12, e. 13Nost 84d, 152, Staingate 12 ib 151d, 1311 Ch, Stayngate Hy 3 Kirkst, Stonigate 13Nost 155d, Stan(e)gatenabbe 1554, 1578MinAcct . v. stānig (steinn), gata 'road'. It refers to a Roman road running west from Bramham through Bardsey township (the Kirkst reference is to the latter stretch).
