Etymology

'Old fortification', v. ald , burh . This is the site of the Roman station of Isurium (infra ). The village is about a mile from Boroughbridge, which is named from it, and near the Roman road to York. It also gave its name to the old wapentake of Burghshire , later known as Claro (1supra ).
