Gannaway Gate

Early-attested site in the Parish of Claverdon

Gannaway Gate. Cf. Gannoweslande 1505MinAcct . This may be a compound of gannow from OE  gamen -hōh (e ), 'game-hill,' already discussed under Gannow Green (PN Wo 291). The compound seems to be a west country one. We may have a similar compound of gamen and ac in Gannock (Herts), atte Gannok 1287Ass (p), Gannok 1348 Cl.
