Etymology

Gaul Field (6″) is Gavelfeld 1395 EA iv, Gallefelde t. Ed 6Rental , Galls field 1570 Imb, Gawleffeilde 1621SewersD , Gaulfield 1688– 1797Wisb . OE  gafol , 'tax, tribute' and feld . 'Land for which rent was paid' as opposed to the common fields. Cf. Galleywood (PN Ess 234), Galton (Do), Gaveltone DB, Gawlish and Galford (PN D 74, 187).
