Etymology

'Cottages of the woodman or woodmen,' or possibly even of 'a man called Wudemann ,' v. cot(e). In the Assize Roll of 1263 we have mention of Wdemanneshorn in Edburton and in AD 15514 (13th) of the parish of Wodemannestorne in this locality, so also Wodesmansthorne c. 1246 (AD iii), so that it would seem that at one time the village was named alternatively from the woodman's cottage or his thornbush.
