Historical Forms

  • Anesford (sic) 1253 ADii
  • Avesforde 1331 ADiii

Etymology

For additional forms of a similar character, v. Avisford Hundred supra 136. An OE  pers. name Afa or Eafa is well established and so is the diminutive form Aefic derived from it (Redin 80, 150). Avisford is possibly from OE  Æficesford or, if the date of the early Pipe Roll form (v. supra 136) is against that, we may take the name to be an unrecorded Aefi .
