Wakeham

Early-attested site in the Parish of Terwick

Etymology

Wakeham has the-same form from its earliest occurrence in 1279 (Ass ). It is probably 'Waca's ham(m).' The same man probably gave his name to the lost Wakeford (1254 FF 1258 Ipm) which was near Trotton. The name Waca is not on record but seems to lie behind Wakeham (D), Wakaham 1313Ass , Wakefield (Y), DBWachefeld , Wakeley (Herts), DBWachelei , while the corresponding OGer  name Wacho is common (Förstemann, PN 1487). Wache is found c. 1155 as a pers. name in Norfolk (Harl 47 H45).
