Etymology

A patronymic, derived according to Ekwall (PN in -ing 58) from a pers. name Glott showing the root of Ger glotzen , 'to stare,' ON  glott , 'sneer,' cf. Glottenham infra 475. This pers. name is apparently found in glottes wylle (W), BCS 477. For the vowel, v. Introd. xxviii.
