Etymology

Landport Fm is Lamport 12thAD A 44, 20/3, 1575 SRS 19, 231, Lambport 1724 B, and gave name to the family of Nicholas de Lamporte (1296 SR). It is difficult to see how port in any of its possible senses, 'harbour,' 'gate,' 'town,' could ever have been applied to this site. The first element maybe lam , lamb , or lang , cf. Lamport 430infra .
