Etymology

This is probably a compound of bierce and the OE  name Cetol which is found in the ME version of a Wiltshire charter (BCS 915) in the p.n.s chetoles beorge , chetoles heafde . The name is probably the English equivalent or even an Anglicising of the common Scandinavian Ketel and the source of the common later surname Chettle . Hence 'Cetol 's birch-tree .'
