Hope Fm

Early-attested site in the Parish of Rudgwick

Historical Forms

  • la Hope 1353 Cl
  • Hope 1524 SRS19,223

Etymology

Hope Fm is la Hope (1353 Cl), Hope (1524 SRS 19, 223), v. hop . The situation of the place is on a hill sloping down to a little hollow off the Arun valley, so that either sense of hop is possible, but that of 'enclosure' is the more likely.
