Etymology

This name is possibly of ME origin and used of a farm (v. tun ) which was Northling (i.e. towards the north, v. -ling in NED) in relation to Ringmer (cf. Westlingforlong in Clapcot (Berks), Bodl 76). In 1332 (SR) we have a John de Northetoune in Ringmer, probably a simpler name for the same place.Norlington should perhaps be coupled with Middleham and Southerham supra 355. Note that Middleham is once called Midlyngham .
