Etymology

This name is identical with Patching (Ess) as pointed out by Ekwall (PN in -ing 60). It is a derivative of a pers. name Pæcc or Pæcci , a name which is found in a weak form in Patcham infra 293 and in a strong form in Pachescumb in Heyshott (1230 FF) and Parkgate supra 211. Hence, 'people of Pæcc (i ),' v. ing .
