Etymology

It has usually been assumed that this name contains a pers. name Pæcca , a weak form of that noted under Patching supra 248, but the entire absence of early a -forms and the DB form with i are curious. In this name we seem rather to have a pers. name Pecc (e )a with sporadic i as an AN spelling. Cf. the history of Peachley (PN Wo 133). The later form may well have been influenced by Patching.
