Etymology

Courtup Fm (6″) is Curtehope in 1310 (Cl), Courthope in 1418 (FF) and may be the source of the well-known Sussex name Courthope , though the family itself is commonly found in East Sussex, deriving perhaps from an unidentified Curting (e )hope (c. 1210, c. 1240 Pens) in the eastern part of the county. These must be from an unrecorded OE  pers. name Curta found in Courteenhall (Nth), DBCortenhale , and in a derivative form Cyrtel in Kirtling (C), Kirtlington (O), Kirklington (Nt). The word hop is probably used here in the sense of 'enclosure.'
