Etymology

Vinehall was the home of John de Fynhage (c. 1310 Pens), Joceus de Fynhawe (1327 SR) and Henry de Fynhagh (1340 NI).It is called Vynawes in 1566 (AsM ) and is on the top of a hill so that we possibly have OE  fīn , 'heap,' here used of a hill (cf. Findon supra 197). Hence, 'enclosure on the hill,' v. haga .Alternatively, 'enclosure marked by a wood-heap.'
