Etymology

The earliest name for this place was Pinham (1151 Dugd vi. 260), Pynham juxta Arundel (n.d. ib.). This perhaps contains an OE  pers. name Pinna , v. Pinton (PN Wo 334) and cf. Pingwell infra 414 and Pynenherst 1230 FF, Pynenhurst 1296 SR (p) in this county. Its later name—Canonici de Calceto de Arundel , Calceto de Arundel (1200 FF), La Chauceye (1276 Cl), Prior de Calceto , Calceto (1332 SR) —is derived from the causeway built by the monks to connect the castle and town with the hill on the opposite side of the valley (Eustace, History of Arundel 39). Cf. Causeway Green (1724 B) and the similar history of Causey in PN NbDu 41.
