Etymology

The further forms given under the hundred-name supra 317 make it clear that this is OE  swāna -beorg , 'peasants' hill' (v. swan , beorg ). More than one antiquary has suggested that this is the place at which the moot of Swinbeorgum , mentioned in Alfred's will, was held, but the early forms show that this is an impossible identification.
