Etymology

There is evidence for a pers. name stem Cupp - in OE. We have the pers. name Cupping (c. 1053) from Hants and the forms Kypingus , Cyppingc (11th) from the Hyde Liber Vitae , as also the p.n. cuppan wællan (KCD 705) in a Hampshire charter and the field-name Cuppingesfryth iri. Berks (1300 Cl), Kyppyngescroft in Sf (14th), Kyppyngheth in Sx (1467). All these tend to make a name Cyppi of the strong form not unlikely. We should have expected some Cup - forms as well as some in Kep -, Kip -, but their absence is not fatal to such a suggestion. Hence 'Cyppi 's farm,' v. tun .
