Historical Forms

  • Scrases bridg 1594 Rowe

Etymology

Scrace Bridge (6″) is Scrases bridg in 1594 (Rowe) and is to be connected with the family of Scras first mentioned in RH (1272) in Plumpton nearby. In 1544 (Ct ) John Skrak held a tenement 'joyning to haywards hothe.' His tenement, now in ruins, still exists and is quite close to the bridge (M.S.H.).
