Etymology

That the two forms of the name were regarded as alternative is shown by their occurring in the same document and by such forms as Heryngham al. dicta Herdham (1399Ass ), Hardham al. Heringham (1602 SRS 14, 106), Hardham otherwise Irringham (1740Recov ). The first form of the name represents an OE  Heregȳðehām , 'ham of a woman named Heregȳð .' At the same time there must have been an alternative form in which, from the shortened form Here of that name, was made the name Hering (a )ham , 'home of Here or Here 's people,' v. ing .
