Etymology

There are, in addition, a certain number of forms in which editors have transcribed the name as Elvestede or Eluestede but the evidence of such forms as Elenestede , Elmestede is conclusive that these should have been read as Elnstede . Only from Eln - could one get later Elen -, Elm -. Two forms in -stude have been noted, one 12th and one 13th cent.

'Elder-tree place,' v. ellen , stede , or 'place of the elder-trees' from gen. pl. el (le )na .
