Etymology

North Hall is Cleeres House in a Tax List of 1621. This name would seem to be the last relic of the important chace of les Cleres (1237 FF), Clers (1272 RH), Cleris , Cleres (1294–1300 Pat), le Cleers (1307Ass ), Clerys (1493 IpmR). For this OFr word denoting 'forest-glades,' v. Clearfields Fm (PN Bk 119).
