Etymology

'The people of Piper(a),' an r -derivative of the OE  pers. name Pippa . Cf. Ekwall, PN in -ing 61, v. ing . See also Peppering Eye infra 498. The same pers. name is probably found in Peperharrow (Sr), DBPipereherge . Zachrisson (ZONF 4, 254) suggests that we have here an ing -derivative of a hill or river-name Pipere . The river below is however the Arun, olim Tarrant, and there is no evidence for hill-names of this type. Peppering Eye infra 498 on the other hand (unknown to Professor Zachrisson), which must clearly contain the same ing -name, is low-lying by a stream.
