Etymology

'Beorhthelm's farm,' v. tun . The abbreviated form Brighton is said to be used in deeds of temp. Charles I (Lower i. 81), but did not come into common use until the early 19th cent. Brighton is used in Horace Smith's Horace in London (1813).
