Etymology

Abbot's Wood is so called in 1540 (Lewes Deeds ) and takes its name from the fact that the land was once in the possession of Battle Abbey (Lower i. 12). Its old name was Lindhersse (1337), Lyndhershe (1349), Lynershe wood (1535), Lyngnashe (1564), Lygnashe (1602), all from FM . The old name is a compound of lind and ersc , 'limetree earsh.'
