Etymology

Shootlands is Shutland c. 1680 ParReg, and was the home of John de Schite (1281Ct ), William ate Shete (1332 SR) and Robert atte Schete (1385Ct ). This is probably the OE  *scīete , 'corner of land,' a side-form of scēat , discussed in PN D 184, s. n. Shute, and PN Wo 180, s. n. Cockshoot. The place lies near the head of a deep secluded valley.
