Fifhide (lost) is Fifhid (e )1202 Seld iii, 1226, 1312 Merton, Fifide 1223, 1291 ib. The place is associated with Shellwood infra in the Merton Cartulary, but its situation within the parish is unknown. The name means 'five hides,' v. hid , and is identical in origin with Fyfield (Berks, Ess, Ha, W), Fifield (O), Fifehead (Do) and Fivehead (So).
