Etymology

Denshott (6″) is Dun (e )(s )chedde 1241Ass , Donshudde 1255 ib., (p), Duneshide 1272 ib., Dunshedde 1276 Cl (p), Dunshud 1279Ass , 1414 LBa, Donschond (sic)1332 SR (p), Dunshotte 1584FF , Denchet 1823 G. The second element here is the OE  scydd , postulated for Gunshot (PN Sx 132), and cf. Puckshot supra 206.Hence 'shed or swine-cote on the hill,' v. dun .
