Bury's Court

Early-attested site in the Parish of Leigh

Historical Forms

  • Burghheye, Burgheye 1325 LBa

Etymology

Bury's Court is probably identical with Burghheye , Burgheye 1325 LBa, the s being pseudo-manorial. This may be identical in origin with Burway supra 110, the place lying low by the Mole, or, if the first spelling is the correct one, the name must be a compound of burh and (ge)hæg, referring to an enclosure defended or protected in some way.
