Etymology

Shawford (lost) is Scaldeford 1229 FF (p), Shaldeford (e )1279 Merton, 1307Ass (p), Shaldeford in the parish of Ewelle 1358 AD iii, Shaldeford al. Rokesley 1458 VCH iii, 281, Shawford 1652FF , 1711Recov , Shawford al. Roxley 1660Deeds Enrolled . This seems to have been an alternative name for Roxley supra 75.There is a ford over the Hogs Mill River at Roxley, and the name is doubtless descriptive of that 'shallow' ford, v. sceald .Cf. Shalford infra 246, and Shawford (TA ) in Exton (Ha) (on scealdan ford BCS 758) and Shawford in Road (So) (Schaldeford 1280Ass (p)).
