Chamber Mead

Early-attested site in the Parish of Ewell

Historical Forms

  • Charman mead 1577 EwellReg
  • the common called Cherlemannesmede 1408 ib

Etymology

Chamber Mead (6″) is probably Charman mead 1577 Ewell Reg, and earlier the common called Cherlemannesmede 1408 ib.'Meadow of the ceorlman or ceorlmen ,' v. mæd . Cf. Cherlemanemede 14thSt Thomas , in Lambeth. In both these names we seem to have an unrecorded OE  compound of ceorl and mann , denoting a rustic, a villein, or the like.
