Etymology

The evidence is somewhat conflicting. Some forms suggest an OE  Eardingtūn , 'Earda 's farm, or that of his people,' but others Heortingdūn , 'Heort 's down,' with loss of initial h . v. ing , dun . For Earda , cf. Arden (PN NRY 202), Ardley (Ess), Ardingly (PN Sx 251–2), for Heort cf. Hartington supra 62.
