Etymology

'The farmstead in land partly surrounded by water' from ēg 'island' and tūn 'farm'. The addition of Church to Eaton is to distinguish it from Wood Eaton about a mile to the north-west.There was a priest at Church Eaton in 1086 DB. Wood Eaton does not come into any prominence until the middle of the 13th century.
